Salon Spotlight | Whittemore House, NYC
For someone who's not a fan of change, I certainly have an affinity for switching up my hair color. I'm a natural brunette but I've tried out everything from brown to blonde, auburn to copper and a whole lot of shades in between – and it hasn't always been pretty (as is well-documented by a scroll through my Facebook of yesteryear). I've sought out many of the purportedly "best" salons New York City has to offer in search of the perfect hair hue, but it wasn't until I visited Whittemore House Salon that I found my mane mecca.
I've been a client of co-founder Larry Raspanti's since shortly after he opened his salon doors in 2009 with fellow former Bumble and bumble Creative Director, Victoria Hunter…and I haven't strayed once. Walking down the steps to the ground floor of the historic West Village building, you feel as though you've found a gem – and indeed you have. The salon has a neighborhood feel that many of the city's corporate chain salons can't hold a candle to – and the personal attention they give each client is more than a cut above the rest. There is an evident pride and passion to every element of the salon, from the curated products they stock to the meticulously designed space that's equal parts grandeur and grit. They've helped me discover many of my favorite haircare brands from Sachajuan to Oribe, and the newest fixture on their shelves – Purely Perfect Cleansing Creme – for those in search of a shampoo alternative. I was even first introduced to one of my all-time favorite haircare products at Whittemore House, Davines' Alchemic conditioner, which keeps my hair color du jour looking refreshed between salon visits.
As two of the pioneers behind the modern highlighting art of hair painting, Larry and Victoria have redefined hair color, constantly experimenting with new techniques to keep things interesting. Larry's the only colorist I've had who's not only game to accomplish whatever color I have in mind, but he seems to read my mind, coming up with results that never disappoint. Despite the fact that the Whittemore House Salon team is entrenched in the editorial, fashion runway and celebrity spheres, with one of the most impressive roster of resumes in the industry, they never lose sight of the value of giving each client the attention they're due. Who doesn't want perfection without pretention?
So let them offer you a glass of citrus or cucumber water and relax. Your hair is in good hands – the best, I'd say.
